The answer is "it depends". The following factors should be considered:

• Age of the laptop:  is it more than 3 years old? Parts will be difficult to find and expensive. Older laptops will be prone to more hardware failures more often. Fixing one part doesn't mean another won't break tomorrow.
• Which part is being replaced: Memory and hard drives are cheap. Screens, motherboards, or cases are not!
• Extent of the damage:  Did you step on it and it crack everything inside? That's a replacement.
• Make & Model: Some laptops are more difficult to repair than others. Apple Macbooks, and Microsoft Surface's are very difficult to repair.
